Jungsturm Hitler badge 1923
The first NSDAP youth movement and predecessor to the Hitlerjugend (Hitler Youth or HJ) was the Jungsturm Adolf Hitler. The initial impetuous came from Adolf Lenk, a piano maker from München, aged just 18 in 1921. He began to recruit boys aged between fourteen and eighteen for his ‘Jungsturm Adolf Hitler’ and whilst attending a meeting in early 1922 at which Hitler was present, he suggested the organisation become the NSDAP’s official youth section. This suggestion appealed to Hitler and the official formation was announced in newspapers on the 8th of March 1922. The Jungsturm Adolf Hitler was essentially the youth section of the Sturmabteilung or SA, known as the brownshirts.
Around 140 groups were founded across Germany but following the failure of the München putsch the NSDAP and with it the Jungsturm Adolf Hitler were banned. Some cells of the Jungsturm Adolf Hitler went underground and continued their activities including that of Kurt Grüber in Plauen (Saxony) who would eventually become the first national leader of the Hitlerjugend (HJ).
